One size doesn’t fit all. Using the same program for everyone may cause more harm than you know. When developing programs for different clients have you taken into consideration all their strengths and deficits? Beyond the Basics Shoulder was developed in order to take you behind the scenes, so you can see what happens when your client gets injured. You will learn to assess them with precision and find out how to progress their program pre/post injury and when to slow down. The big bonus is you will get to see what treatment techniques your clients go through and see what evidence supports those techniques. When you know what is happening behind treatment doors you can be more effective than the trainer that is clueless.

Program SummaryBoth workshops will teach how to integrate modern pre and post injury exercise techniques with your Personal Training clients. Move your clients from injury to maximum performance. Learn assessments that are relevant to health coaches and trainers, and observe demonstrations of techniques used by specialists to accelerate healing and improve exercise performance. Videos and live demonstrations will be used to facilitate learning.

How to develop strength, stamina and mobility at the same time?

Functional Training is key!

We have all been there: spending hours in the gym doing isolated movements to build size and strength to then realise that you lack mobility and stamina, making it quite hard to apply all these gains anywhere else than at the gym.

Or maybe you (or your client) have been exclusively running and/or cycling and/or swimming to prepare for a marathon/endurance event. You were definitely able to increase your endurance… but with a definite loss of strength and flexibility (hello tight hip flexors!), making you more prone to injuries.

The word functional training is being thrown around quite a bit and people get a little bit confused. What is functional training exactly?

Functional training is a classification of exercise which involves training the body for the activities performed in daily life.

Functional training, if performed correctly, will lead to better joint mobility and stability, as well as more efficient motor patterns. Improving these factors decreases the potential for an injury sustained during an athletic endeavor. performance in a sport. The benefits may arise from the use of training that emphasizes the body’s natural ability to move in six degrees of freedom. In comparison, though machines appears to be safer to use, they restrict movements to a single plane of motion, which is an unnatural form of movement for the body and may potentially lead to faulty movement patterns or injury. In March, we have the pleasure to be running the following courses (which are both required for the Master Functional Trainer Certificate): Fundamentals of Powerbag Training (04/03/2017) and Fundamentals of Functional Mobility (05/03/2017)

Fundamentals of Powerbag Training

p1080236a

The Functional Training Institute have the only accredited Powerbag course in the world.

The Powerbags are one of the BEST tools for teaching people essential movements. The ‘Fundamentals of Powerbag Training’ is primarily focused on teaching hip, knee and pressing mechanics.

These are essential and fundamental movement patterns that every client must learn. Too often clients are progressed too rapidly or taught incorrectly. The reasons that the Powerbag is the tool of choice for establishing these movement patterns is the soft nature of the bag, the handles and symmetrical load.

Hip mechanics and hinging are the first patterns covered in the course and in immense depth. Proper hip hinging is essential for power based movements such as deadlifts, swings, snatches and cleans. The Powerbags course establishes the proper mechanics from a kneeling position and then progresses to standing. Progressions such as cleans and snatches are then introduced.

Knee mechanics are essential for squatting and lunging patterns. The course establishes optimal positions and how you can load these patterns for different levels of ability and strength.

Correct pressing and overhead mechanics are covered in detail. The handles enable optimal pressing mechanics for the shoulder and the correct overhead postion is emphasised.

The design of the Powerbag enables it to impart training results that are truly unique. The instability of the bag encourages stabilising muscles to be switched on during the exercises. The instability also encourages more coordinated movements in the training.

The soft Powerbag design makes it terrific for partner based exercises where the bag is thrown. This enables some great interaction as well as rotation based movements.

Why do this Powerbags Course?

  1. You will teach fundamental movements and exercises correctly. Clients will perform functional lifts with proficiency. This will impart a great foundation for more technical exercises in the future.
  2. You will become a great coach of foundational movements. This will separate you as a professional.
  3. You will be armed with a variety of exercises that will add great variety and interaction to your sessions.
  4. You will be one of the few certified Powerbag trainers in the world.

Fundamentals of Functional Mobility

p1080608a

Mobility is an essential component of ANY exercise program. This is the case whether it is a one on one session or group exercise session. It is paramount to helping your participants move better and minimising the chances of injury occurring.

Most people have misunderstood mobility and think that it is merely a few stretches before a session. This couldn’t be further from the truth and this kind of routine will often lead to less efficient movement.

Our Mobility training course covers the essential components of any well designed mobility program in depth:

  • Joint Rolling

  • Self-Myofascial Release

  • Mobilisations

  • Activations

  • Stretching

It is a combination of these elements that will enable clients to move more freely and through a greater range of motion when exercising.

Our seated posture has placed an even greater emphasis on the importance of mobility training. Clients do not want to just look good but they also want to feel good and move better.

Clients don’t want aggravating niggles present as they exercise. Instead, they want good posture and a reduction of pain from previous injuries.

There is a combination of both theory and practical components. Participants work together in groups as they practice the techniques and see the impact it has on movements. The course is supported with a series of videos and detailed manual so participants have resources to continually refer to.

Why do this Course?

  1. Clients will love you! Who doesn’t want to feel better? Move Better? Have improved posture or enjoy some massage?
  2. You will stand out as a GREAT Trainer! Helping people with niggles and posture in addition to their other goals will help separate you from other trainers.
  3. You will get Clients BETTER Results. After a properly designed mobility program, clients will be able to complete exercises through a full ROM.
  4. You will be in a great position to generate referrals from other health professionals as you work collaboratively on helping people move better.

Help your clients with their New Year resolutions: Become a Metafit Coach!

image001

What is Metafit

Metafit® is a tough 30-minute high-intensity interval training class that keeps working your metabolism for up to 24 hours after you’ve finished. With Metafit® HIIT you use your own bodyweight to exercise for intense effort periods ranging from 5 seconds to 5 minutes long at 90 percent of your heart’s maximal rate, followed by varied recovery times at 45 percent. These work and relief periods are alternated for around 20 to 30 minutes. Created by a former UK Royal Marine Commando, Metafit® burns fat like no other exercise!

Five Key Benefits of Metafit

1  IT SAVES TIME

In fact just 10 minutes can burn more calories than a 30-minute treadmill session. If you are super busy or need to get fit fast for a special occasion then Metafit® is the most efficient workout for you. According to a 2011 study presented at the American College of Sports Medicine Annual Meeting, just 2 weeks of high-intensity interval training improves your aerobic capacity by as much as six to eight weeks of endurance training.

BURNS MORE CALORIES

The workout itself is a calorie buster but it’s still working long after you’ve finished. 24 hours after a short Metafit® workout your body has burned more fat and calories than if you had gone for a long run. The concentrated bursts of energy exerted during the class sparks the repair cycle in your body.

RETAINS MUSCLE

Metafit® workouts are different from steady cardiovascular exercise like running or treadmill because they preserve muscle by concentrating weight loss on fat stores. That’s great news for dieters who, in the past, may have seen a loss in muscle mass together with fat through cardio programs.

A STRONG HEART

A report in the Journal of Physiology says Metafit®-style HIIT workouts can quickly make the heart stronger, citing the case of cyclists who, after just two months of HIIT, were able to keep up the same pace for twice the distance. This is because Metafit® pushes the body into the anaerobic zone, which makes you feel like you can’t breathe and your heart is trying to escape your body, but is actually very good for you!

5  SLOWS AGEING

According to the Journal of Sports Science HIIT programs like Metafit® work to trigger human growth hormone (HGH) production by as much as 450 percent for 24 hours post-workout. HGH is a key factor in decelerating our ageing, and is also vital for increasing the rate at which your body burns calories.

Meet AFC Personal Trainer of the Year 2016, Saudi Tan from Singapore

The AFC Personal Trainer of the Year Award recognizes the Personal Trainer who embodies the traits of an excellent role model for personal trainers in Asia. Someone with a professional demeanour, who delivers quality training practices to a variety of clients, who offers community service and who contributes positively to the growth and development of the industry.

pt-of-the-year-award-2016

Saudi receiving her award on October 8th

FIT Singapore was present at the AFC and was so proud and excited when Saudi was awarded this prestigious award.
This is a little bit about her…

1- How long have you been a Personal Trainer/Coach for?
I have been a Fitness Coach for 5 years. I used to be a Physical Educator.

2- What do you specialise in? (e.g Bootcamp, Strength and Conditioning, Rehab, Functional Training, Weight loss, Pre/Post Natal, etc)
A big part of what I do in FuelFit is Outdoor Group Training (similar to bootcamp but alot more intimate and personal)
I also specialize in Lifestyle Coaching which includes Functional Training and Nutrition & Mental Wellness Coaching.

3- How important is continuing education for you and Fitness Professionals in general.
I personally take continuing education very seriously as I believe that the industry is evolving constantly with new research findings and scientific data.
With continuing education, I can keep abreast with the latest knowledge, expand my skills set and more importantly, increase the value I can give to my clients.
I keep aside an annual budget to make sure I attend at least 1 certification course and 1 conference a year.
I strongly encourage all fitness professionals to plan for educating themselves at least once a year.

4- Any advice for a brand new personal trainer who just got certified?
Don’t be afraid to ask for help and also don’t assume you know everything.
The best fitness professionals are always willing to guide and mentor you, you just have to ask!
In fact, even the best of us are still learning from each other and have our own mentors/coaches to support us in this journey to impact and change more lives through fitness.
